The FDA's Use of Accelerated Approval Programs in Medicine

Image
Since the outbreak of the 1992 AIDS/HIV epidemic, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has relied upon ‘Accelerated Approval’ programs. These programs provide pharmaceutical manufacturers greater leniency when commercializing a potentially life-saving drug and also allows both patients and physicians to take more extraordinary measures to combat a life-threatening illness. The umbrella term of accelerated approval programs applies to four types: (1) the fast-track designation, (2) the breakthrough designation, (3) the accelerated approval pathway, and (4) the priority-review designation. Each program is used based upon select criteria and requires, in every case, a post-confirmatory trial to determine whether there is a clinical benefit to the drug or not. Historically, accelerated approval programs were not as commonplace as today. Now, the FDA’s usage of accelerated approval programs is ubiquitous. To elaborate, since 2015, the FDA has granted manufacturers the loosened regulatory ...

What Are Ganglion Cysts?

Image
Ganglion cysts are masses that form near joints and tendons on the wrist, ankle, hand, or foot. They are typically filled with a thick fluid, although the consistency can vary considerably from case to case. Cysts come in many different sizes, with some of them reaching an inch and a half across and others barely noticeable. They're usually round in shape, although depending on the location, they can also develop an oval-like configuration. This type of growth rarely develops deep within tissue, meaning that it resides near the skin's surface. Are Ganglion Cysts Harmful? Although large lumps on the body are usually not a good sign, in the case of ganglion cysts, there is little danger to health. These cysts are benign, non-cancerous. They also don't tend to form near areas with significant potential for harm, such as major blood vessels, and the biological material found within is simply an excess of naturally occurring bodily fluids. Beyond the formation of a lump, they...

Benefits of Using Laser Distance Measurers

Image
A laser distance meter allows you to conduct measurements by aiming a beam of light at objects or surfaces. These sophisticated devices need batteries and cost more than conventional tape measures, but they offer multiple important benefits. Accuracy A measuring tape may bend when you try to find the number of feet between two distant points. This makes it somewhat harder to obtain an accurate measurement. Fortunately, laser distance meters don't have that problem. Range This technology enables people to measure greater dimensions. While many tapes only span 16 or 25 feet, laser distance measurers cover 40 feet at a minimum. Numerous models have maximum ranges of 120, 164, 200, or 330 feet. Convenience To use a meter, you merely need to aim the light beam and press a button. You probably won't have to climb over obstacles, walk across the room or find a place to hook the end of a tape. Calculations Some laser measurers can automatically perform various mathematical calculations...

Red Pandas Live the Wild Life

Image
Most people are familiar with red pandas. These fluffy russet furballs are popular at zoos, where their climbing antics entertain kids and adults alike. They're also popular in YouTube videos, where they get into all kinds of mischief. But how do these appealing creatures live in their natural habitat? Red pandas are native to the high-altitude forests of the Eastern Himalayas in parts of India, Nepal, Bhutan, China, and Myanmar. They may live at 7,000 to 13,000 feet of elevation. Their habitat is cold and mountainous, so they have a thick undercoat beneath their rusty-colored fur. They also have a long, bushy tail to cover their faces on cold nights, as well as fur padding on the bottoms of their feet. Red pandas are arboreal and well adapted to tree life. Their ankles are flexible, making tree climbing easy, and they can even go headfirst down tree trunks. Their coloring helps them remain camouflaged against reddish moss on the trees. Red pandas rely on the trees to keep them saf...
